Mexican Folk Art Alebrije Javier Blas Frog Oaxacan Wood CarvingThis hand made and stylized “hatching” African frog was hand carved and hand painted by Javier Blas, the son of the late Medardo Blas, Sr. This carving is 7” inches wide by 5“ inches tall. The Blas Family of wood carvers is the most famous of Oaxacan Pedro Cajonos artists and their style is so unique it can be identified readily upon sight. Bright colors and fine detailed painting are their hallmarks in creating their folk art Alebrijes depicting fantastical creatures or familiar animals. Alebrijes is a Zapotec Indian word for “crazy dream.” No two Oaxacan pieces are exactly alike and this one is has intense, vibrant colors and intricate patterns. There are no removable parts to this copal wood carving and it is signed by the artist, Javier Blas.
