On May 25th, 1983 Sleeping Beauty’s Castle drawbridge was lowered - for only the second time in Disneyland’s history - and the world saw a newly remodeled Fantasyland with many renovated attractions, more wide-open spaces, and the replacement of a Renaissance styled fairground with the look of a Bavarian village. Many of the attractions, such as Alice in Wonderland, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, and Peter Pan’s Flight were among those renovated, and King Arthur’s Carrousel, along with The Mad Tea Party were moved to allow a better traffic flow. To commemorate the reopening a special invitation was sent to cast members inviting them to choose one of four dates when they and a guest could enjoy Fantasyland for themselves.. This came in the form of a metal key attached to the invitation inviting cast members to “Unlock the Magic”. The key, which has Sleeping Beauty’s Castle on the bow, “New Fantasyland 1983 Opening” on the shaft, and the bit resembling an antique key, measures 6 1/2” long, the bow is 2” x 2”, and the bit is 1 1/4” x 1”. The vellum-finish cardstock measures 9 3/8” high x 7 1/4” wide, and the Fantasyland Commemorative ticket stub is 9 3/8” x 3 3/16”. The Sleeping Beauty’s Castle pin, which measures 2 7/16” at its widest point x 2 5/8” high, is composed of five stacked layers, with the dropdown drawbridge measuring 2 11/16” high x 3/8” wide and the castle interior and chain gold-tone, is a Disneyland Resort Cast Exclusive limited edition (3000) pin that was not issued in conjunction with the Fantasyland Opening, but I’ve included it to honor the fact that the Castle drawbridge was closed during construction of the new Fantasyland and then reopened on May 25th, 1983. The shadow box frame door is firmly held closed by two small magnets (see photo), the frame can be freestanding with a foldable back kickstand or mounted on the wall with the sawtooth picture hangers imbedded on the back of the frame. which was purchased at The Pottery Barn. The picture frame and its contents weigh 4 pounds, 14 ounces and measures 18” long x 11” wide x 2” deep. The inner measurements are 16”x 8 1/2” x 9/16”. All items are in excellent condition.
