This progressive design put cutouts of players over solid-colored backgrounds with posed photos. Topps introduced its all-star cards in this edition, and at the time, this was the largest Topps release at 494 cards. That record would be eclipsed the following year. This set laid the groundwork for the seminal set that would follow the next spring.This is known as being a tough set to collect in top condition. Printing quality issues that plagued Topps sets of the 1950s are on full display here with varying color quality and plenty off-center cards and miscuts produced. The card stock that was chosen for this year has not stood the test of time, making high-grade sets even more difficult to assemble.However, the affordability makes this an attractive set in part due to the lack of key rookies. Key cards in this set include Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Ted Williams and Roger Maris. The key 1958 Topps Rookie Cards are: #47 Roger Maris #343 Orlando Cepeda.
